Psychotherapy for Adults, Couples and Teens in Durham NC

Home CBT Trauma Work Links CV in Brief

I am a clinical social worker in private practice and provide counseling for a wide range of concerns, including:

  •  substance abuse/addiction
  •  depression
  •  anxiety
  •  trauma
  •  grief and loss
  •  stress management
  •  life transitions
  •  relational/marital problems.

My clients often come to me when they have been unable to overcome certain problems in living and are ready to engage in an active process of exploration and change. I ask them to recognize themselves as active agents in creating their own lives and help them to recognize and enhance their strengths and capabilities. The ultimate aim is "to create a life worth living," as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) would put it.

Along with DBT, I have been trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Enhancement, Imago Relationship Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). I also value Existential Psychotherapy, a philosphical approach that helps individuals grapple with the Big Issues: Death, Freedom, Isolation, and Meaninglessness. I often work in conjunction with my husband, James Finch MD, a family physician certified in Addiction Medicine who assists individuals seeking to overcome alcohol or other drug problems through the use of adjunctive medications and monitoring.

I am an in-network provider for BCBS PPO plans, Cigna, Managed Health Network (MHN), and United Healthcare Student Resources (Duke students). Prospective clients with these or other insurance plans may want to inquire about out-of-network benefits, deductibles and copays before scheduling a visit. Plusses of going out-of-network or entirely out-of-pocket include greater confidentiality and flexibility.

I invite you to give me a call or send an email, set up an appointment, and see whether you would feel comfortable engaging me as a partner on your journey of growth and change.

A limit of time is fixed for thee, which if thou dost not use for clearing the clouds from thy mind, it will go and thou wilt go, and it never will return.

Social Worker of the Year

I am honored to have been named "Social Worker of the Year" by my colleagues in the North Carolina Society for Clinical Social Work. They cited my contributions to substance abuse treatment and education as well as to Red Cross Disaster Response as reasons for this recognition. While helping others prevail is reward enough to me, I am very grateful for their respect.
