National Institute on Drug Abuse  -- http://www.nida.nih.gov/:  A division of the National Institutes of Health, NIDA funds and promulgates research on the physiological precursors and effects of substance use and abuse as well as behavioral and pharmacological treatments. There is a wealth of information on their website, including free treatment protocols for clinicians from studies they have sponsored.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism -- http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/:  "N-I-Triple-A" has a mission similar to NIDA's but focuses on alcohol use disorders.

Join Together -- http://www.jointogether.org/: Great resource center for communities seeking to reduce substance abuse. Balanced information and links to recent journal research articles. Joining their email subscription list brings you a brief recap of daily news.

EMDR Institute -- http://www.emdr.com/: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a type of trauma therapy that is especially helpful for people who have suffered single, discrete traumas like an accident, a violent crime, or a natural disaster and are manifesting symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. It uses alternating bilateral stimulation to help clients move safely through emotional processing and on to more integrated, adaptive, and less distressing ways of thinking about their experience. I use a gentle "TheraTapper"  (http://www.theratapper.com/) instead of eye movements, which some clients have found uncomfortable.

DNMS Institute -- http://www.dnmsinstitute.com/: Like EMDR, this is a trauma therapy that uses alternating bilateral stimulation to facilitate the work. It focuses on building ego strengths before working through past traumas and their associated negative self-beliefs. It is especially helpful for individuals who have experienced more diffuse, or longer-term traumatic circumstances like abuse or neglect in childhood.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy -- http://www.behavioraltech.com/:  DBT is a treatment approach that blends cognitive behavioral strategies with the practice of mindfulness acceptance to help individuals tolerate distress, regulate their emotions and deal more effectively with interpersonal relationships. While it was originally developed for people with borderline personality disorder, it helps ease problems associated with depression, anxiety, social phobia, and addictions, among others. I lead a weekly group for clients with substance use disorders (see button above).

Imago Relationship Therapy -- http://www.imagotherapy.com/:  An approach to couples therapy that increases each partner's empathy and understanding for the other and teaches individuals to see their relationships as opportunities for growth and self-realization.

Note:  While you will not find my name listed as a provider on the last four websites -- I have not pursued official certifications in these therapies -- I have participated in trainings for all of them and would not employ any skills or strategies if not confident of my abilities or against the directives of the theoreticians themselves.

Alcoholics Anonymous, Durham, Vance, Granville and Person County meetings -- http://www.aanc32.org/;
Orange County -- http://www.aanc33.org/.

Narcotics Anonymous, Carolina Region -- www.crna.org/region.html

SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training), www.smartrecovery.org. Non-spiritual, abstinence-based self-help drawing from cognitive-behavioral change strategies.

Women for Sobriety -- www.womenforsobriety.org:  Abstinence-based self-help with its own, empowering steps for recovery and growth. Meetings on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Cornwallis Rd, Durham.
